Mary was born in New Ulm, Minnesota on August 10, 1935. She was the older of two daughters born to Joseph Leonard and Alice America (Halsey) Dietz. Mary entered school in St. Louis, Missouri and completed the 3rd through 12th grades in Tracy, MN. She attended St. Catherine's College in St. Paul, Minnesota where she completed a BA in Music, Theology and English. In 1956, she entered the order of St. Joseph's Sisters of Carondelet, whom she served for 6 years as Sister Lauren. In 1965, Mary earned a master's degree in Counseling at Oklahoma State University. Following her graduation, Mary moved to Arizona and spent two years as a school counselor at South Mountain High School in Phoenix. In 1967, she married Dr. Bruno Schabarum with whom she had three daughters, Sarah, Lisa and Tonya. Since their births, Mary spent her time providing lives filled with love and laughter for her children. Mary was also briefly married to William Taylor, with whom she remained friends until her death.
At various times Mary also worked as a mediator for special education students, and served in many charitable roles, including on the MARC board, as a Docent at the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) and in many positions within her church. Mary has been a devoted parishioner at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Mesa since its founding in 1985. Prior to that, she attended Christ the King Roman Catholic Church.
Mary had many passions and earned the friendship of a variety of wonderful people with whom she shared those interests. She was an accomplished pianist. She enjoyed music, singing, dancing and travel. She was an avid reader and her Book Club will miss her dearly. She was a friend of Bill W. for nearly 37 years and was also active in her Wednesdays Women's Group.
