Milwaukie, Oregon - Patricia "Patsy" Trevizo Ploog passed away peacefully on November 4, 2025, in Portland, Oregon, surrounded by her family. She was born on October 23, 1946, in Mesa, Arizona, to Concepcion and Anne Trevizo.
Patsy graduated from Westwood High School in Mesa, Arizona, in 1965. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Arizona State University in 1974, followed by two Master's degrees—one in Education (1989) and another in Educational Administration (1996).
In 1969, Patsy married Dirk Ploog. Together, they began their married life in Great Falls, Montana, where Dirk served in the U.S. Air Force—a time Patsy always remembered fondly. They welcomed two daughters: Jennifer in 1972 and Kristin in 1982.
Patsy devoted her career to education and to sharing her love of the Spanish language. She taught Spanish at Marcos de Niza and Corona del Sol High Schools in Tempe, Arizona, where she also served as Department Chair for Foreign Languages. Under her leadership, a unified Spanish curriculum was developed, and she introduced a fifth-year Advanced Spanish Literature course for dedicated language students. Patsy was a major contributor to the Spanish AP program, serving as a national grader and curriculum writer. Her passion for teaching inspired countless students, many of whom went on to achieve fluency and college credit in Spanish. She was deeply respected and cherished by both her students and colleagues.
After retiring from teaching, Patsy and Dirk moved to Portland, Oregon, to be closer to family and to help care for their beloved granddaughter, Isabel. She found great joy in volunteering at Isabel's school and being a presence in her life. Patsy never stopped learning—she loved crossword puzzles, exploring new facts, and taking up games like mahjong, which she enjoyed playing with neighborhood friends.
Throughout their marriage, Patsy and Dirk shared a love of travel. They explored Mexico, the California coast, and many of the national parks across Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana, including Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons, and Glacier National Park. They also cherished trips to visit both their daughters on the East Coast, which led to memorable journeys through Upstate New York and New England as well as the Mid-Atlantic including New York City and Washington DC. In 2019, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family trip to Italy—a lifelong dream for Patsy—where they explored Florence, the Tuscan countryside, and Rome together. It was a beautiful and unforgettable experience for all.
Patsy is survived by her husband, Dirk Ploog; daughters Jennifer Ploog (Christopher Parra) and Kristin Ploog (Alex Dunphy); granddaughter Isabel Rose Parra; and sister Clara Trevizo.
Her warmth, intellect, and kindness will be remembered always by those who were fortunate to know her.
